The harsh Midwestern winters played a pivotal role in the establishment of Pasadena. In 1874, a group of people from Indiana purchased land at the edge of the Arroyo Seco and formed the San Gabriel Orange Grove Association. In 1875 they founded a town, originally called “The Indiana Colony”, but later became known as Pasadena. With orange and olive groves already growing on the land, the settlers decided to plant more, along with a large quantity of grape vines. Businesses popped up around the groves to form the center of the town which continued to grow and attract new residents and visitors each year.

The “City of Roses” was incorporated in March 1886. It was the second incorporated municipality of Southern California after Los Angeles and is the eighth largest city in Los Angeles County. It also has gained notoriety as host of the annual Rose Bowl football game and Tournament of Roses Parade. Pasadena is located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, just nine miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
